I got sent home from school today. I guess it was pretty bad. I don’t exactly remember what happened, but the nurse told me when I came to that I must have had some kind of seizure. My friends say it was scary. That my body went rigid and my eyes were glassy and I didn’t respond to anyone calling my name or touching me. Then I went down hard, slamming to the floor, shaking and making noises like I was choking.
I don’t remember any of that at all. All I remember is that I was taking a history test when my vision went sort of wobbly. The whiteboard at the front of the class started billowing like a sail, and when I turned my head, everything else in the room looked like it was bubbling or sagging, even people’s faces. And my hearing was messed up too. Everything sounded slow and underwater, except for this really intense high-pitched buzzing noise. I didn’t know what to do. I just sat there, not trusting myself to move or speak. But I realized at some point that other people had noticed. I think I was gurgling or something, because everyone turned to look at me, which just made everything worse.
I couldn’t stand to look at their faces. These people I’ve known for years suddenly looked strange and awful. I smelled smoke and fire, and that was when I really got scared. I wanted to yell and warn everyone, but I couldn’t. I felt my throat close up, and I couldn’t move my body, either. And it was incredibly hot. The visual distortions I was seeing were from wave after wave of heat from this terrible fire. The floor and the desks all started to melt, and the smoke was burning my eyes, and the smell of burning plastic was everywhere. And still my classmates just sat there, staring at me, sometimes moving their mouths, but I couldn’t hear them. I couldn’t hear the fire, either, even though I could smell it and feel it and see its effects. I didn’t hear crackling or snapping like you expect from a fire. I didn’t hear anything at all.
Then everything went black, and the next thing I remember, I was waking up in the nurse’s office. Gramma Patty came and got me, and now I’m sitting at home. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing, exactly. I don’t feel sick, or like I need rest. If anything, I feel weirdly energized. Are they going to let me go back to school tomorrow?
